New Fine to Target “Human Flesh” Hunters, Not Hunted

Xuzhou, a city in Jiangsu province, has established a maximum fine of RMB 5,000 for human flesh searches effective June 1, 2009, reports Yangzi Evening News. The regulation also requires public netcafes and hotels to adopt real-name registration and store information for at least 60 days, said the report. Establishments that violate the ordinance may be fined RMB 1,000-10,000.
A translated Mandarin phrase, “human flesh search” refers to the collective use of online resources by Internet vigilantes to target individuals thought to have violated laws or public morality.
