What happened to Beijing’s hutongs?

The image above (brought to us by Michael) shows what once was a traditional hutong community that has been demolished in preparation for future urban builiding projects. Beijing used to be full of hutong communities before the construction boom began. These single-level communities were not efficient for urban planning, so many have been demolished and replaced by sky-skyscrapers, like the hutong in the picture above.

Yes, what a pity. I was living in Beijing in 2001/02 and I saw many of those Hutongs fall. At that time you could get lost in the little alleys in Central Beijing and all the Hutongs were full of laobaixing life.
I am not sure this exists anymore. Last time I checked this Summer the Hutongs around the lakes felt really gentrified, with designer shops and tourist cafes. Boring.
